How long do Vietnamese use motorbikes?

Based on a survey of 300 people, this column examines Vietnamese motorbike usage, changes over time, and influencing factors such as traffic congestion, ride-hailing services, fuel costs, work location shifts, and lifestyle changes.

Motorbikes are an essential part of daily life in Vietnam, particularly in urban areas like Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. For many, they are not just a mode of transportation but a necessity for commuting to work, running errands, and social activities. To better understand motorbike usage patterns, we conducted a market research survey among 300 people in these two cities. The goal was to examine how long they use their motorbikes daily and whether their riding habits have changed over time.

How Long Do Vietnamese Use Motorbikes?

Our research found that 95% of respondents use their motorbikes on a daily basis. This high percentage reflects the reliance on motorbikes as the primary mode of transportation. When it comes to riding duration, nearly half of the respondents spend more than an hour on their motorbikes each day. Among them, 14% report riding for more than two hours. These longer riding hours are often due to long commutes, as many people travel considerable distances between their homes and workplaces. Traffic congestion further contributes to extended riding time, making motorbike usage a significant part of daily routines.

How Have Motorbike Riding Hours Changed Compared to Before?

When asked about changes in their motorbike usage compared to a year ago, responses were mixed. While 49% of respondents said they now ride more than before, 15% reported a decrease in riding hours. The remaining participants indicated that their motorbike usage has remained the same. The increase in riding hours suggests that commuting conditions have worsened for many people, leading them to spend more time on the road. On the other hand, those who reduced their riding time have likely found alternative transportation options or experienced lifestyle changes that affected their commuting patterns.

What Factors Influence the Change?

There are several factors that contribute to changes in motorbike riding hours. Among those who reported an increase in usage, the most significant reason was traffic congestion. A total of 62% of respondents mentioned that after the implementation of new traffic rules and stricter penalties, they now spend more time on the road as they follow the regulations. Increased traffic volume has also played a role in longer commuting times.

On the other hand, some respondents have reduced their motorbike usage due to the rise of ride-hailing services. About 30% of those who reported a decrease in riding hours said that the availability of more ride-hailing options influenced their decision. Additionally, 26% stated that ride-hailing has become more affordable, making it a more convenient alternative to riding a motorbike. Rising fuel costs have also contributed to this shift, with 35% mentioning that higher fuel prices have made them reconsider their motorbike usage.

Other factors that impact motorbike usage include changes in work location and lifestyle. About 37% of respondents reported that they now have a different work location, which has either shortened or eliminated their need to ride a motorbike regularly. Additionally, 31% mentioned lifestyle changes, such as working from home more frequently or shifting to a different daily routine, as reasons for altering their motorbike usage patterns.

Conclusion

Motorbikes continue to be the dominant mode of transportation in Vietnam, with the majority of people relying on them for daily commuting. However, riding habits have been shifting due to various factors, including worsening traffic congestion, the rise of ride-hailing services, and economic considerations such as fuel prices. While some individuals are spending more time on the road, others are choosing alternative transportation options to adapt to changing conditions. These findings highlight the evolving nature of transportation in Vietnam and the need for further improvements in urban mobility.
